Many ask what the difference is between therapy (or counseling) and coaching. Perhaps the following will help make it clear: Therapy assumes dysfunction or illness which requires healing.
Coaching assumes the client is healthy and just needs better skills.
Therapy has its roots in medicine and psychiatry.
Coaching is rooted in sports, business and personal growth.
Therapy works to help people understand themselves and heal emotionally.
Coaching helps people to learn to function better.
Therapy focuses mainly on the past and feelings.
Coaching focuses on actions and future. The only reason for looking into the past is for better understanding of how it affects the present and providing an opportunity to make more effective decisions.
Therapy works with the unconscious mind.
Coaching works with the conscious mind.
Therapy works for resolution of pain and old patterns.
Coaching works for solutions, learning new skills and making effective choices.
